Perfect.                                   http://www.quintessentialbedandbreakfast.co.uk/feature/news/153 Tue, 20 May 2014 00:00:00 GMT What a difference a year makes! Believe it or not, a year ago the very talented Lesley Chalmers, our 'official' photographer, swept down to the Cotswolds to take fabulous photographs of two of our Cotswolds members, Dauntsey Park House and The Piggery. Whilst snow was not quite still lying on the ground, it was bitterly cold, there was not a leaf on a tree and roses were a couple of months away from flowering. It even looked cold! Lesley concentrated on the interiors of both glorious properties. A year later! The irrepressible Lesley hopped in her car from Manchester and popped down to revisit Dauntsey Park House and The Piggery. And, this is what she found! Set on the banks of the River Avon and generating its own electricity via a giant archimedes screw, Dauntsey Park House is a grade 2* home offering luxury bed and breakfast in the most romantic of settings. A gem.   Set on the outskirts of one of the Cotswolds' prettiest villages, The Piggery offers luxury bed and breakfast in an elegant home, oozing humour and character as befits its origins. Unlike other websites that purport to bring you the very best luxury bed and breakfast accommodation, we invest in professional photography so as to describe visually and powerfully just how special this exclusive collection of luxury bed and breakfast homes is.  We visit, we select and we photograph, taking all the hard work out of finding that elusive fabulous place to stay. http://www.quintessentialbedandbreakfast.co.uk/feature/news/152 Tue, 6 May 2014 00:00:00 GMT It's not too late to go away....Last minute availability at our exclusive collection It's not too late to book somewhere divine to stay this Bank Holiday Not everyone has time to think ahead. The setting for the 2011 Game Fair, Blenheim Palace is a unique example of English Baroque architecture set in 2,100 acres of beautiful parkland, landscaped by Capability Brown in the mid-18th century. The Palace was created to celebrate the British victory over the French in the Wars of the Spanish Succession, and was a gift from Queen Anne and a grateful nation to the First Duke of Marlborough, the triumphant military commander who led his forces to victory at Blindheim (Blenheim) in 1704. http://www.quintessentialbedandbreakfast.co.uk/feature/news/138 Wed, 24 Jul 2013 00:00:00 GMT A Quintessential Summer of Fine Festivals Designed to give you access to the most luxurious and exclusive bed and breakfast private homes, our website also provides a fairly comprehensive source of places to go and things to do when you are staying there.  If, for example, you want to find the perfect luxury bed and breakfast for the upcoming Big Feastival,  you will find a brilliant map which shows you exactly where your closest Quintessential Bed and Breakfasts are. Some have a 'day job' and some have a 'day job', as well as making the most of their extraordinary properties to provide luxury bed and breakfast in other parts of their establishments.  One such is High Park Farm, one of our luxury bed and breakfast homes in North Yorkshire. In addition to the two fabulous bed and breakfast bedrooms in the main farmhouse, Philip and Jane have transformed one of their farm outbuildings into an additional Quintessential Bed and Breakfast suite, The Escape. You can stay at The Escape and enjoy the wonderful hospitality at High Park Farm or, should you wish, cook your own breakfast!             http://www.quintessentialbedandbreakfast.co.uk/feature/news/135 Tue, 4 Jun 2013 00:00:00 GMT What a Lovely Review of our Luxury Bed and Breakfast in West Wales Sometimes, guests who stay at our member homes are so keen to share their experience that they very kindly write to us. One such review was received today from some very happy guests to our luxury bed and breakfast in West Wales, Tyllwyd Hir, near Llandovery. "We recently stayed at Phil and Jen's B & B in Carmarthenshire and cannot recommend their hospitality enough. The bedroom and bathroom were immaculately clean. It was unseasonably cold on our first night and Jen kindly gave us a thicker duvet the second night!  Breakfast was delicious. Clothes and boots were dried after a wet day of walking and tea served infront of a roaring woodburner. We did not want to leave after a perfect long weekend. The only one minor drawback was that there did not appear to be a footpath direct from the house? So we ended up walking down the drive and back before breakfast! We have recommended this B & B to friends and would return without hesitation."  We could not have said it better ourselves and, believe me, we have been there, as we have to all of our beautiful luxury bed and breakfast members' homes. http://www.quintessentialbedandbreakfast.co.uk/feature/news/134 Tue, 28 May 2013 00:00:00 GMT Focus on: Carmarthenshire, the Garden of Wales As you head for the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park in West Wales, do not sail through Carmarthenshire, the Garden of Wales. Stay a while at our fabulous, five star luxury bed and breakfast, Tyllwyd Hir, perched on the side of a Carmarthenshire hill with views to die for. And, not one but three gorgeous donkeys to boot. Home to the National Botanic Garden of Wales (debut winner of a Silver Award at this week's Chelsea Flower Show), Carmarthenshire is a truly beautiful destination in its own right.  Visit beautiful Aberglasney, one of the most talked about gardens in the UK. Nestled on a hillside in the spectacular Tywi Valley countryside, the house and gardens have been magnificently restored after years of neglect. Or, with an history steeped in myth and legend, visit Carmarthenshire's historic mediaeval castles, some of the most authentic and atmospheric castles in Europe. If that is not enough, explore the sleepy seaside town of Laugharne, the creative home of Wales' most famous literary figure, Dylan Thomas.  http://www.quintessentialbedandbreakfast.co.uk/feature/news/133 Wed, 22 May 2013 00:00:00 GMT Focus on: Stately Homes and Horticultural Gems in Wiltshire Whether you are staying at our luxury bed and breakfast, Crockerton House, in the south or the extraordinarily beautiful Dauntsey Park House in the north of the county, Wiltshire is a county of breathtaking natural beauty and home to a world class collection of beautiful stately homes and horticultural gems. Stourhead's harmonic vistas - especially the classic view of the Turf Bridge, lake and Pantheon on the opposite shore - seem to epitomise the county as a whole. This outstanding stately home, one of Wiltshire's finest 18th-century landscaped gardens, is a mix of formal and informal features. And at Stourhead's heart lies a Palladian mansion filled with glittering furnishings and object d'art.  At Bowood House and Gardens, master landscaper 'Capability' Brown created a flowing mix of woodlands and lawns sloping down to a lake, overlooked by the formal terraces of an imposing stately home. Bowood has an all-round appeal, for set amongst its woods is an imaginatively designed Adventure Playground for younger visitors. Longleat is a beautiful stately home in Wiltshire and also attracts a family audience. The house, seat of the Marquess of Bath, is surrounded by magnificent grounds that again bear the mark of industrious 18th-century landscaper 'Capability' Brown. Wilton House is another stately home in Wiltshire. Here, the magnificent 450-year-old house - seen in films such as Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice - stands amongst parklands, woodlands and water gardens. Lydiard House and Park near Swindon is a Georgian jewel. With its formal parkland, pasture, beautiful woodland walks, avenues and lake, it still retains the grand design of its 18th-century heyday. The Larmer Tree gardens in the south of the county were originally designed as pleasure grounds for 'public enlightenment and entertainment' and are recognised by English Heritage as a garden of national importance.  Summer is upon us. Book your luxury bed and breakfast in Wiltshire and enjoy its magnificent collection of houses and gardens. http://www.quintessentialbedandbreakfast.co.uk/feature/news/132 Wed, 15 May 2013 00:00:00 GMT Get some Fresh Air at Quenington 16 June to 7 July 2013 FRESH AIR 2013, one of the UK’s leading outdoor contemporary sculpture shows, takes place in the lovely 5-acre garden of Quenington Old Rectory from Sunday 16th June to Sunday 17th July 2013. A wide range of disciplines is on view including bronzes, glass, stainless steel, stone, ceramic, marble, wood, fabric, plastic and resin to multi-media installations. Huge, beautiful pots to withstand the climate, textiles invented not to fade or shred, a banner for a birthday, surprising metal work or wonderfully worked glass placed in a border constantly changing according to the time, light and weather can all be found at this year’s 10th biennial Fresh Air.  One of the many delights of Fresh Air are its riverside gardens and varied settings where some 200 works by 100 sculptors are skilfully placed to provoke maximum thought and surprise. Each year new patterns evolve with young emerging sculptors exhibiting alongside the more established. A third of the exhibitors are new to the event. This year, inspired by the beauty of the Cotswold garden, bordered on one side by the quintessential Cotswold village of Quenington and on the other by mature trees and the river Coln, there are six artists making site-specific installations in trees, flower beds and the river. What we did not know at the time is that Fiona would choose two of our members to feature in the Guide which goes out with the fabulously luxurious Country and Town House magazine to over 50,000 homes in London and is available to buy in supermarkets such as Waitrose, Sainsbury and Marks & Spencer. This is the introduction to the Great British Hotels Guide which says it all for our two chosen members, Easby Hall in North Yorkshire, and Nonsuch House in South Devon: "After 25 years of reviewing hotels for Charming Small Hotel Guides and The Sunday Telegraph, Fiona Duncan knows the places that hit the spot, ones that linger in the memory and that you will want to return to. All of the hotels in our 2013 guide are run with care and commitment by their owners, they reflect their locations and sit comfortably in their landscape." Scotia's darling seat! All hail thy palaces and tow'rs, Where once, beneath a Monarch's feet, Sat Legislation's sov'reign pow'rs: From marking wildly scatt'red flow'rs, As on the banks of Ayr I stray'd, And singing, lone, the lingering hours, I shelter in they honour'd shade. Here Wealth still swells the golden tide, As busy Trade his labours plies; There Architecture's noble pride Bids elegance and splendour rise: Here Justice, from her native skies, High wields her balance and her rod; There Learning, with his eagle eyes, Seeks Science in her coy abode. Thy sons, Edina, social, kind, With open arms the stranger hail; Their views enlarg'd, their liberal mind, Above the narrow, rural vale: Attentive still to Sorrow's wail, Or modest Merit's silent claim; And never may their sources fail! And never Envy blot their name! Thy daughters bright thy walks adorn, Gay as the gilded summer sky, Sweet as the dewy, milk-white thorn, Dear as the raptur'd thrill of joy! Fair Burnet strikes th' adoring eye, Heaven's beauties on my fancy shine; I see the Sire of Love on high, And own His work indeed divine! There, watching high the least alarms, Thy rough, rude fortress gleams afar; Like some bold veteran, grey in arms, And mark'd with many a seamy scar: The pond'rous wall and massy bar, Grim-rising o'er the rugged rock, Have oft withstood assailing war, And oft repell'd th' invader's shock. With awe-struck thought, and pitying tears, I view that noble, stately Dome, Where Scotia's kings of other years, Fam'd heroes! had their royal home: Alas, how chang'd the times to come! Their royal name low in the dust! Their hapless race wild-wand'ring roam! Tho' rigid Law cries out 'twas just! Wild beats my heart to trace your steps, Whose ancestors, in days of yore, Thro' hostile ranks and ruin'd gaps Old Scotia's bloody lion bore: Ev'n I who sing in rustic lore, Haply my sires have left their shed, And fac'd grim Danger's loudest roar, Bold-following where your fathers led! Edina! Scotia's darling seat! All hail thy palaces and tow'rs; Where once, beneath a Monarch's feet, Sat Legislation's sovereign pow'rs: From marking wildly-scatt'red flow'rs, As on the banks of Ayr I stray'd, And singing, lone, the ling'ring hours, I shelter in thy honour'd shade. I could use a whole range of superlatives but to sum up in one...fantastic! The accommodation is contemporary, stylish and beautiful, the food that Fina provided for us was so good that we chose not to eat out at all. We were a party of 10 and we made a special request for a paella which was stunning not only in its presentation but also in its flavour. Fina could not have been a more charming, fun and welcoming hostess, and she very quickly became one of 'our gang'! I must also mention James, who looked after us with a very quiet and friendly efficiency, coupled with a mercurial wit. I can recommend the Church House wholeheartedly."  August 2012 "Six of us have just enjoyed a luxurious and pampered weekend as guests of Fina and James at The Church House, Midhurst, West Sussex. For a group of 4-8, we could not recommend it highly enough. The property is absolutely 5* and the quality of the food outstanding. Fina is a very accomplished hotelier and restauranteur, as well as being excellent company. Midhurst is well located for many attractions - Petworth House, Arundel Castle, South Downs, Petersfield, Chichester to name but a few. It was our first experience of Quintessential B&B which we plan to use again for next year's trip." So now you know! It was late June. The steam hissed. Someone cleared his throat. No one left and no one came On the bare platform. What I saw Was Adlestrop -- only the name And willows, willow-herb, and grass, And meadowsweet, and haycocks dry, No whit less still and lonely fair Than the high cloudlets in the sky. And for that minute a blackbird sang Close by, and round him, mistier, Farther and farther, all the birds Of Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire.  http://www.quintessentialbedandbreakfast.co.uk/feature/news/74 Fri, 1 Jun 2012 00:00:00 GMT A warm welcome to Belstone, a Quintessential Cotswold gem       Named after the famous 'Ballad of the Belstone Fox', a heartwarming story chronicling the life of a fox much smarter than the dogs that hunt him, Belstone is a beautiful Cotswold stone cottage that nestles in the utter tranquillity of the romantically named Tally Ho Valley. Poems have been written about all sorts. Whilst we search for the ultimate in luxury bed and breakfast, we would like to share some poetic meanderings around some of the places on our website and some of the things we can do on this beautiful island. To the River Tweed by William Lisle Bowles (1762-1850) O TWEED! a stranger, that with wand'ring feet O'er hill and dale has journey'd many a mile, (If so his weary thoughts he might beguile) Delighted turns thy beauteous scenes to greet. The waving branches that romantick bend O'er thy tall banks, a soothing charm bestow; The murmurs of thy wand'ring wave below Seem to his ear the pity of a friend. Delightful stream! tho' now along thy shore, When spring returns in all her wonted pride, The shepherd's distant pipe is heard no more, Yet here with pensive peace could I abide, Far from the stormy world's tumultuous roar, To muse upon thy banks at eventide.  http://www.quintessentialbedandbreakfast.co.uk/feature/news/73 Thu, 17 May 2012 00:00:00 GMT Focus on - North Northumberland and the Scottish Borders Be it fishing, golf, beaches or castles in the air, North Northumberland and the Scottish Borders comprise a truly spectacular region. Our professional photographer has been touring the country taking wonderful images of some of our newest Quintessential Bed and Breakfasts, showing them off to their very best within this showcase website. The impact of fantastic, professional images is immediate. A recent email from a guest wrote the following: "I took a look at your new website and it's spectacular. It's the kind of website I've been looking for all week, with great big pictures that open in a seperate window. I'm really appalled at how many places have their listings with pictures the size of postages stamps, that look as if they were taken with their mobiles." Take a look at what can be achieved by the power of the professional with the most extraordinary eye for a picture. First under the lens was our wonderfully comfortable farmhouse in Snowdonia, Dolffanog Fawr. It was early Spring but the light was fantastic and our photographer captured the very essence of the place - quality. Next up was Uplands House, a wonderfully comfortable family home in Warwickshire. The garden was at its early Spring best and the sky was, well, blue! Then down to South Devon to capture the essence of two very special - and very different - Quintessential Bed and Breakfast homes - contemporary luxury at Kaywana Hall, and Nonsuch House,  where every room has a spectacular view of the Dart Estuary. And, finally, before shooting off for an early Summer break, the wonderful Baroque splendour of Capheaton Hall in Northumberland. Deciding upon the appropriate images for Quintessential Bed and Breakfast was not an easy task! The early Summer has provided us with some extraordinary light to capture these wonderful bed and breakfast homes.  Quintessential Bed and Breakfast will continue to ensure that each of its member's beautiful and luxurious homes are photographed to their full potential. Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England, and has been the home of the Percys, Earls and Dukes of Northumberland since 1309, making this year the 700 year anniversary. The earliest mention of Alnwick Castle in the history books appears soon after 1096 when Yves de Vescy became baron of Alnwick and erected the earliest parts of the Castle. The Castle was first restored, primarily as a fortress, by the 1st Lord Percy of Alnwick in the early 1300's and portions of this restoration remain today, including the Abbot's Tower, the Middle Gateway and the Constable's Tower. Since then generations of Percys have continued to make their mark. During the late 17th century the Castle fell into decay until Elizabeth Seymour and her husband, Hugh Smithson, later to become the first Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, took up the challenge and turned it into a family residence of "gothick" style with the help of architect, Robert Adam, and the landscape designer, Capability Brown.  http://www.quintessentialbedandbreakfast.co.uk/feature/news/19 Wed, 2 Feb 2011 00:00:00 GMT Historic Family Home in Northumberland joins Quintessential Bed and Breakfast Steeped in history and set in glorious Northumberland countryside, Capheaton Hall is a unique place to stay and is open for guests to enjoy and explore for the first time in its history.
